A comprehensive study of structure and properties of nanocrystalline zinc peroxide

2022

Abstract Nanocrystalline zinc peroxide (nano-ZnO2) was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and comprehensively studied using several experimental techniques. Its crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the average crystallite size of 22 nm was estimated by Rietveld refinement. The temperature-dependent local environment around zinc atoms was reconstructed using reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis from the Zn K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. The indirect band gap of about 4.6 eV was found using optical absorption spectroscopy. Lattice dynamics of nano-ZnO2 was studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. In situ Raman measurements indicate the stability of nano-ZnO…

Impact of Ir modification on the durability of FeNC catalysts under start-up and shutdown cycle conditions

2022

A common problem associated with FeNC catalysts is their poor stability dominated by the carbon oxidation reaction (COR). In this work, the feasibility of stabilizing FeNC catalysts with small quantities of Ir was explored. With iridium being present, instead of COR the oxygen evolution reaction should be favored. The impact on structure and morphology was investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The catalytic activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction was evaluated by rotating ring disc electrode experiments and accelerated stress tests mimicking the start-up and shutdown cycle (SS…

TEM and Raman characterisation of diamond micro- and nanostructures in carbon spherules from upper soils

2008

Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique cond…

Coupling of electrochemical, electrogravimetric and surface analysis techniques to study dithiocarbamate/bronze interactions in chloride media

2018

International audience; Interaction between ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) and bronze in 30 g L-1 NaCl was investigated at several concentrations between 0.1 and 10 mM by means of various electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Electrochemical measurements revealed a fast adsorption process of PDTC on Cu and Pb and the formation of a thick insulating and protective film with a high surface coverage. At high concentrations, PDTC prevents oxides formation. Surface analyses confirm PDTC adsorption on bronze mainly via interaction between sulphur atoms and Cu sites to form Cu I-PDTC complex.

Diffusive equilibrium properties of O2 in amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles probed via dependence of concentration on size and pressure

2014

An experimental study on the diffusive equilibrium value of interstitial O2 in silica nanoparticles was carried out on samples with average particles diameter 40, 14, and 7 nm. The investigation was performed by measuring the concentration of interstitial O2 by Raman and photoluminescence techniques. The dependence of diffusive equilibrium concentration on pressure and temperature was investigated in the pressure range from 0.2 to 76 bar and in the temperature range from 98 to 244 °C. The equilibrium concentration of interstitial O2 follows Henry’s law at pressures below 13 bar whereas a departure from this model is observed at higher pressures. In particular, O2 concentration saturates abo…

Identification Techniques I

2012

Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy have a high potential for characterisation of material. Extensive series of wet chemical analysis may be substituted by a single spectroscopic measurement followed by detailed chemometric data evaluation. Topics of this chapter are: (i) basics of IR and Raman spectroscopy, (ii) the registration of “correct” spectra, and (iii) spectra evaluation. Dedicated applications in the area of conservation science are collected in separate chapters. The infrared (IR) spectrum is often called the fingerprint of a substance. An IR spectrum identifies a substance like a human fingerprint. Due to their origin the features of an IR spectrum are bands, not peaks. They in…

Excitonic Transitions in Homoepitaxial GaN

2001

The photoluminescence spectrum of a high quality homoepitaxial GaN film has been measured as a function of temperature. As temperature increases the recombination of free excitons dominates the spectra. Their energy shift has successfully fitted in that temperature range by means of the Bose-Einstein expression instead of Varshni's relationship. Values for the parameters of both semi-empirical relations describing the energy shift are reported and compared with the literature.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the stability of the monoclinicBaWO4-II phase at high pressure and high temperature

2010

In this work we report high-pressure (HP) and high-temperature (HT) ex situ and in situ experiments in ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$. Starting from powder samples of ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$, scheelite structure $(I{4}_{1}/a)$, we reached conditions of 2.5--5.5 GPa and 400--1100 K using a Paris-Edinburgh press. The quenched samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements at ambient conditions. Depending upon the final $P\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$ conditions we found either the scheelite or the monoclinic ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$-II $(P{2}_{1}/n)$ structure. We also performed HP-HT in situ Raman measurements in a single crystal of ${\text{BaWO}}_{4}$ using a resistive-heated diamond-anvil ce…

High-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy and analysis of the ν 1 , 2ν 1 -ν 1 , ν 2 , 2ν 2 , and 3ν 2 -ν 2 bands of CF4

2013

The spectra of the ν1, 2ν1–ν1, ν2, 2ν2, and 3ν2–ν2 bands of CF4 were obtained with a quasi-continuous wave stimulated Raman spectrometer. These five bands were studied at a temperature of 135 and 300 K (for the hot bands). The spectrum of ν1 was obtained at a sample pressure of 2 mbar. For the spectra of the other regions, which are much weaker, higher pressures were used. The analysis has been performed thanks to the xtds and spview softwares developed in Dijon for such highly symmetric molecules. Combining the present results with a previous infrared study, we could determine a very accurate value for the C–F equilibrium bond length, i.e. re = 1.31588(6) A. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & S…

The importance of vibronic perturbations in ferrocytochrome c spectra: a reevaluation of spectral properties based on low-temperature optical absorpt…

2005

We have measured and analyzed the low-temperature (T=10 K) absorption spectrum of reduced horse heart and yeast cytochrome c. Both spectra show split and asymmetric Q(0) and Q(upsilon) bands. The spectra were first decomposed into the individual split vibronic sidebands assignable to B(1g) (nu15) and A(2g) (nu19, nu21, and nu22) Herzberg-Teller active modes due to their strong intensity in resonance Raman spectra acquired with Q(0) and Q(upsilon) excitations. The measured band splittings and asymmetries cannot be rationalized solely in terms of electronic perturbations of the heme macrocycle. On the contrary, they clearly point to the importance of considering not only electronic perturbati…
